相手が積んできた何かに対する想像力を持たないことは、人間をここまで薄く、同時にここまで強くすることにびっくりする。

「相手を見下すこと」は恐ろしい。見下して足下をすくわれてしまったときに、もう自分には受け身が取れなくなってしまうから。同時にたぶん、相手を見下す勇気を持たないと、物事は成功しない。相手を「尊敬」している限り、リスクは取れないだろうから。

何かのビジネスで成功した人、あるいは歴史上の征服者、侵略者のことごとくは「あえてリスクを取る」勇気を持っていて、この勇気はおそらく、相手を見下す勇気に等しいものなんだと思う。最初にオレオレ詐欺を始めた人にしても、大成功した政治家にしても、何かの決断を行って、一定の成功をおさめた人に共通するの決断した勇気であって、これは勇気であるとも傲慢であるとも、あるいは無知であるとも言える。どれもたぶん同じ意味なんだろうと思う。

勉強や想像は、やるほどに怖くなる。やれば何か積めるし、積んだら崩すのが怖くなる。相手を知ことは勝つための基本だけれど、同時にたぶん、相手を知りすぎた人は戦う決断を下せなくなる。知ることは大事だけれど、決断するためには「無知である」ことが大切になる。知るほどにリスクは大きく見えて、それを見下せる人でないと、リスクは取れない。
