Tumblrは現在、4,200万人のユーザーを誇っています。

デビッド・カープのモットーは「自分が使いたくなるようなツールでなければ作る意味はない」というものです。彼はグーグルに買収されたYouTubeが広告をどんどん入れ始め、ユーザーが折角作ったビデオをゴチャゴチャした宣伝で汚しはじめたことに批判的です。

彼はシリコンバレーでは最近利益追求の傾向が強くなっており、シリコンバレーを目指す若者も拝金主義に毒されてきていると考えています。

このためデビッド・カープはTumblrが性急に黒字化の道を歩むことには反対で、現在もビジネス・モデルが無いままにユーザー数の増加だけを追求しています。

こうした経緯からtumblrにはビジネス・モデルが無くてもそれに対して理解を示すVCだけが投資しています。その意味でフレッド・ウィルソンの所属するユニオン・スクエア・ベンチャーズとスパーク・キャピタルが同社の２５％株式を所有しているのは偶然ではありません。

なお現在のTumblrのバリュエーションは8億ドルだそうです。
